Syracuse City Tour

Highlights

  • Get to know the highlights of the city

  • Marvel at historical sights

  • Optional half-day or full-day tour with a local guide

Description

Ancient Greek ruins rise from the green citrus gardens, cafes have their tables set up in baroque squares, and honey-colored medieval alleys lead to the blue sea. It is hard to imagine that this city was once the biggest in the ancient world.

In ancient times, Syracuse was the largest and most powerful city in Sicily for several centuries and formed the cultural center of the island. In 2005, UNESCO declared Syracuse a World Heritage Site along with the Necropolis of Pantalica. Go on a journey into the past together with your guide.

Destination

Europe

  1. Italy
  2. Sicily

Syracuse is located on the southeastern coast of Sicily, in the estuary of the Anapo and Ciane rivers. On an optional half-day or full-day tour, you will be introduced to the city's highlights and historical sites. Walk the historical path and let the city enchant you. The approximately four-hour tour will take you to the Neapolis Archaeological Park and the Roman Amphitheater.

The history of the city dates back to the 8th century BC, when it was founded by Doric settlers from Corinth on the Ortygia peninsula. Around 2000 BC, the Romans conquered the city, bringing with them other cultural influences. Over time, Syracuse also came under Byzantine and then Arab rule in the Middle Ages.

Together with Palermo, Trapani, Catania and Agrigento, Syracuse is now one of the largest tourist centers in Sicily. With its old town of Ortygia, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, the city on the peninsula today magically attracts countless tourists.

If you also want to visit Otyigia and the cathedral, please book the 7-hour tour. Although the part of Syracuse that lies on the mainland is not as picturesque as the old town of Ortygia, it nevertheless also offers fascinating archaeological sights. Nearly three millennia after the city was founded, the ruins make up the Neapolis Archaeological Park, one of the greatest architectural sites in Sicily.

Your guide will take you to the most exciting sights of the city. Learn about the legendary fountains and the Jewish neighborhood of La Giudecca, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the ancient city.
