Destination

Africa

Pretoria - Cape Town

Travel by train through half of South Africa - a unique experience for all railroad fans and nature lovers. Experience South Africa's natural beauty up close and personal with a touch of flair from times gone by aboard the Rovos Rail.

At noon, your great train journey aboard the Rovos Rail through South Africa's interior begins at the platform in Pretoria. Make yourself at home in your comfortable suite as the train slowly winds through the country's graceful and lush green landscape.

The Pride of Africa is the nickname of this restored luxury train from the 1920s and 1930s. The interior is unique: elaborate paneling, fine leather chairs, heavy curtains at the windows, exquisite food, champagne and waiters in tails and bow ties - a touch of a bygone era traveling with you. Sit back during this unforgettable ride and get to know the secrets and magic of Souh Africa during a comfortable and elegant ride.

You will travel about 800 kilometers south, at approximately 60 km/h, through the suburbs of Johannesburg and the world's largest goldfield in Witwatersrand. More than 40,000 tons of gold have been excavated here so far, more than in any other mine in history.

In accordance with the old English custom, afternoon tea is served around 4:30 p.m. in the comfortable observation car. It quickly becomes clear why this compartment has become a popular meeting place - and not just because drinks are served here at all times. Get to know your fellow passengers here and strike up a conversation with them. It is the ideal place to relax and listen to exciting conversations over a cup of tea.

The evening meal is a real treat for your senses: lobster, Karoo lamb, sago pudding, fine cheese and the best wines - a gourmet experience.

With a delicious glass of wine from the region, you can end the day in the cozy lounge car or in the observation car.

1 night stay with full board South Africa

Greet the new day in the luxurious and historic Rovos Rail with a sumptuous breakfast buffet in the dining car.

Just before arriving in the South African town of Kimberley, enjoy spectacular views. See tens of thousands of pink flamingos gathered in the Kamfers Dam - don’t forget your camera!

Around 10 a.m., you will arrive in the diamond town of Kimberley and visit the impressive Big Hole. Feel transported back in time to the days of the Diamonds Rush and get exclusive insights into the world of mining. From the overhanging viewing platform you can see the largest hole ever dug by man, an open pit of the former Kimberley mine from which diamonds were transported decades ago - just indescribable. In the adjacent mine museum, you can walk through the old vaults decorated with diamonds and learn what the living conditions of the miners were like through a short film.

Around noon, your journey continues to Matjiesfontein. Relax with a refreshing drink in the observation car and take in the beauty of the country.

After afternoon tea, you will enjoy a delicious dinner in the dining car. Donning elegant attire and enjoying the various fine wines on offer, you will experience a wonderful evening in your luxurious train.

Overnight stay with full board, South Africa

Today you arrive in Cape Town, the long-awaited destination of your trip.

After a fortifying breakfast, you will explore the historic core of Matjiesfontein. One of the most famous sights is the luxury hotel said to be haunted at night. But don't worry - they say it’s a jolly ghost.

Via Worcester. you will continue your journey towards South Africa's second largest city. Now only a few kilometers separate you from your destination. Enjoy the last hours on your train and relax with a hot cup of tea.

You will arrive in Cape Town around 6 p.m. The city is one of the most beautiful in the world. We recommend an extension to your trip in Cape Town! Feel free to contact us about it. Actually, we believe an extension is a necessity… Or did you want to miss Table Mountain or the view of all of Cape Town from Lion's Head? Stroll along the cobblestones and past the colorful cottages of Bo-Kaap. At lunchtime, enjoy a delicious lunch at the Waterfront. A specialty you can't miss is the South African boerewors (a spiced sausage). Afterwards, you can work off all the calories with extensive shopping. Also, head to the Cape Town hinterland - the Winelands. Lush valleys with grapevines contrast with the historic houses of the small towns in this area. Enjoy a wine tasting here in one of the many wine growing areas. We are sure that after this trip you will be professing your love for Cape Town.

If you wish, you can experience this trip in reverse order, from Cape Town to Pretoria.
