Description

When visiting the Udawalawe National Park, stop at the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) for a unique experience. The home has a mission to rehabilitate orphaned and injured baby elephant calves until they are ready to be released into the wild.

The beautiful giants of Sri Lanka are under attack: at the beginning of the last century, around 12,000 elephants roamed the vast lands. Today, there are only about 6,000 left. They are threatened by the loss of habitat caused by the increase in human settlements.

The Elephant Transit Home is in southern Sri Lanka in the Udawalawe National Park. The loving team rehabilitates injured or orphaned elephants. The animals are fed and taken care of by the medical staff. From the beginning, the home’s mission is to release the gentle giants back into the wild after a few years. The home also treats the babies fairly: they are housed in a species-appropriate way and are free to roam the grounds without chains. At the fixed feeding times, the elephants race to the stations - the perfect time for visitors to see them up close!
