Trip to Cape Reinga with Sandboarding and Fish & Chips

Cape Reinga is where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet. Spectacular waves and turbulences show the line of their meeting. At the northernmost end of the Cape is not only a lighthouse, but also an 800-year-old Pohutukawa tree. On a clear day, you can even see the Poor Knights Islands, which are 55 km away. Many people claim that Cape Reigna is the northernmost point of New Zealand, but this is not quite true. North Cape is even further north, but is not open to the public as there is a science reserve. The public road ends at Cape Reinga.

The name "Reinga" means "underworld", because, according to Maori belief, the souls of the dead make a pilgrimage from here along Ninety Nile Beach to the Pohutukawa tree and its roots leading down to the sea. From here, the souls migrate to their homeland of Hawaiki - the mythical country where some Polynesian cultures have their origins. The Maori legends create the perfect atmosphere to the impressive landscape of this area. The special atmosphere of this deserted place is particularly felt in the early morning.

On this excursion, you will drive along the Ninety Mile Beach in a specially built bus. Depending on the weather conditions, you will stop on the way and help the guide/driver to look for shellfish in the water. The trip continues along the Te Paki River until you make a stop at the sand dunes. Here you have the opportunity to try sandboarding at the Te Paki Sand Dunes. Do you dare to glide down the 150-meter-high sand dunes on the board? If you don't dare to go down the dunes standing up, you can also lie on your stomach on the surfboard and jet down the dunes. Afterwards, a walk through the Puketi Kauri Forest will provide the necessary relaxation after so much adrenaline. Here you will learn a lot of interesting things about the majestic Kauri trees that make up this forest.

By the way, your physical well-being is also taken care of, as you will receive a fish & chips lunch snack on the way.
