The sister phenomenon is called the aurora australis. They are less well-known but no less spectacular, just a little harder to find. We will take you from Christchurch to the mystical light show with an Air New Zealand charter flight.

Oceania & South Pacific

  1. New Zealand
  2. South Island New Zealand

Only a few know about the northern lights in the southern hemisphere, making this experience more unique than the rest. An Air New Zealand Boeing 787 Dreamliner will take off from Christchurch with astrophysicist Dr. Ian Griffin.

Fly high about the clouds for the best views of the southern lights. A maximum of two people will sit in each row to guarantee the best views. The captivating experience also includes delicious food onboard. In theory, the southern lights are more challenging to see than the northern lights because it’s generally easier to get the magnetic north pole than the magnetic south pole/ The colorful rain of light is usually known from photos but is an entirely different and gigantic experience in real life. A veil of pink, green, and violet light illuminates the night sky as if painted on by mystical magic. To the Maori people, they see the lights as a fire that the ancestors use to guide their way to the Antarctic, remembering the warm days in New Zealand.

For good photos, good preparations are required. Experts in each cabin class will give you helpful advice and show you the best way to photograph the stunning aurora. Don’t forget your SLR camera, charge its batteries, and see if the memory card has enough storage for all of the photos you will take today. As you soar through the sky, notices how the spectacle does somersaults through the clear night — a sight you’ll never forget. Please note that the southern lights are sometimes invisible to the naked eye. Since we rely on nature, we cannot guarantee a 100% sighting. On your flight, you’ll also see star constellations, planets, and the Milky way like you’ve never seen before.
