At the narrowest points, you can touch both rock faces and both continents.
Thanks to a thick wetsuit, you are well protected from the cold water.
The volcanic rock filters the water so well that you can see several meters away.
Silfra is very inconspicuous at first sight, but under the water's surface, you will discover a hidden world.
The only place in the world where you can dive between two tectonic plates
Crystal-clear water filtered through volcanic rock
Suitable for both beginners and experienced snorkelers
Silfra is an Icelandic natural fissure that allows divers to swim right between two tectonic plates. Discover one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets in the Thingvellir National Park. Swim through the clear water as the light current calmly drifts you through the distinct underwater landscape.
The western part of the Icelandic highlands, very close to the Langjökull glacier, is where the American and European continental plates meet. The Silfra Fissure formed 135 million years ago in the middle of the Thingvellir National Park. As the continental plates drifted apart, they created four active volcanic zones. Since continental drift is a continuous process, the fissure is still getting wider today by about 7 mm to 2 cm per year.
It takes 30 to 100 years for the melted water from Langjökull to penetrate the 50-kilometer-long basalt rock surrounding Silfra. The beautiful stone ensures that the smallest particles filter out, making the water crystal clear.
This unordinary snorkeling trip adventures through cold waters (2°C to 4°C), so the tour will provide a thick wetsuit. The wetsuit also helps you stay afloat near the water's surface. Whether a brave beginner or an experienced snorkeler, this extraordinary experience is suitable for everyone. Float in the water above the deep crevice and nearly touch the outer walls as you drift by. At its deepest point, the fissure is about 65 meters deep and the only place in the world where you can dive between the two earth plates that tear the earth apart. The underground springs create a light current that slowly drifts you beside the aperture.
With your diving goggles and snorkeling gear, you can easily observe the crystal-clear water several feet away. You will discover entrances to cave and tunnel systems that lead to hidden underwater labyrinths.
