A herd of elephants and wild crocodiles cavort at the watering hole. Exotic, colorful birds chirp in the treetops. Magnificent peacocks scurry through the bushes and in the fresh prints on the ground your experienced guide has already picked up the tracks of a leopard. Welcome to your adventure in the Wilpattu National Park!
Spend two days with us in Sri Lanka's largest and oldest park. You will stay at the Wilpattu Safari Camp in the middle of the jungle at the edge of the camp. Two jeep safaris - one in the early morning and one in the evening - led by an experienced guide will ensure numerous animal sightings. A BBQ dinner by the campfire in your luxurious camp on the edge of the national park will round off your stay.
A visit to Wilpattu National Park is possible all year round. We particularly recommend the dry months from January to March as well as the months from May to September. During the dry season, many animals cavort at the numerous waterholes and are easier to spot.
If you absolutely want to see a sloth bear, we recommend a tour in June. During this month, two fruits called palu and weera are in season - they are particularly popular with the furry species.
Upon your arrival at the edge of Wilpattu National Park, the crew of the safari camp will greet you and take you to your comfortable tent in the middle of nature. After you have freshened up, it is time for a tasty lunch.
Afterwards, you will set off for your first jeep safari through the national park. Unlike most national parks, the area in Wilpattu is interspersed with a dense jungle. It's worth a visit for the magnificent plant diversity alone.
But don't worry - numerous clearings and waterholes promise interesting and spectacular animal sightings as well, of course. In addition to turtles, crocodiles and sloth bears, the area is also home to mongooses, peacocks and larger herds of elephants. Aside from the Yala National Park, the chance to see a leopard is highest in Wilpattu.
After an exciting afternoon in the national park, you will return to your camp. Enjoy an authentic BBQ dinner and review your safari around the campfire while listening to the sounds of the jungle.
1 night full board accommodation on the edge of Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka.
After waking up to the sound of birds, you will enjoy an early breakfast at the camp. Afterwards you will go on another jeep safari through the Wilpattu National Park. You will notice that in the morning there is a completely different atmosphere than in the evening. Since most animals follow a more or less fixed daily rhythm, you will probably also discover different species.
At lunchtime, you will leave the national park. You decide where you’re going.
In the winter months, a side trip to the west coast to Kalpitiya or Negombo is worthwhile. In the summer months, we recommend a stay on the east coast. At Uga Jungle Beach near Trincomalee, for example.
If you are on your way to Sigiriya, part of the Cultural Triangle, we recommend our optional trip to the forest monastery in Ritigala:
About an hour's drive from Sigiriya, tucked away in the middle of the jungle, is an important, sprawling ruins of a Buddhist forest monastery.
After a fortifying lunch en route at a local restaurant, walk along a gently ascending mountain path through the ruins surrounded by dense jungle once used by monks. Along the way you will see many different herbs and flowers used to make Ayurvedic medicine.
After the visit you will continue to Sigiriya.
