Lake Constance (in German, Bodensee), also known as the Swabian Sea, is one of Germany's most popular holiday regions. Are you planning a family biking holiday? A romantic getaway for two? Looking for an active vacation? Or how about just relaxing on the beach? Everyone will find something they like at Lake Constance!
During our self-drive tour, you’ll start in Konstanz, a city with Mediterranean flair and a lively cultural scene. Continue your journey to Meersburg before ending up at Obersee, a fantastic holiday destination filled with culture and beach activities.
A holiday to Lake Constance (in German, Bodensee) is worth it year-round. If you want to go cycling or hiking, spring and autumn are the best times to visit. In the summer, the hot days are perfect conditions for swimming or relaxing on the beach.
Welcome to every tourist’s favourite town on Lake Constance (in German, Bodensee): Konstanz! It’s the largest city on the Alps’ foothills and offers the perfect ingredients for a little break from everyday life.
You can look forward to breakfast in small cafes, sightseeing in the historic old town, stroll down the winding streets, enjoy the sun on the lake’s shores, or watch the water sports enthusiasts venture out onto the water. The choice is up to you!
One of the highlights is Konstanzer Münster (in English, Konstanz Cathedral), otherwise known as “Our Lady.” Once you have climbed the medieval-looking wooden staircase, a magnificent city view will reward you at the top.
Mainau is the flower island just off Lake Constance's shores and a must-see during your trip to Konstanz. The island boasts 45 hectares of impressive gardens, dining, and shopping. Each year, it chooses a motto and decorates the island based on it. In 2020, the motto was “Blooming water, floating gardens.”
Today you will leave Konstanz and head toward Obersee. Your drive’s first stop is the ferry from Konstanz to Meersburg. Alternatively, you can take the scenic land route along the Untersee, past Radolfzell and Überlingen. When you arrive in Meerburg, we recommend a short tour through the tranquil village. Small alleys, cosy cafes, and terraces with views of Lake Constance await you.
We recommend a detour to Unteruhldingen, where you can visit a well-preserved pile dwelling settlement from the Stone and Bronze Ages.
Before you reach your new destination, pass the Zeppelin city on Lake Constance: Friedrichshafen. Go on a tour at Zeppelin Museum and learn about the insightful history of this spectacular, rigid airship. How about a Zeppelin flight? Contact us, and we will be happy to book a sightseeing flight of your choice.
3 nights with breakfast in Kressbronn, Germany
For the coming days, Kressbronn is your starting point for your Obersee holiday.
The culinary riches of Lake Constance surround the family-friendly holiday resort. Discover the nearby strawberry fields, cherry and apple tree farms, and explore the exquisite wine vineyards that have grown on the sunny slopes for centuries. How about a delicious meal in one of the many taverns or restaurants?
Enjoy sensational views of the Swiss Alps and Säntis Mountain from the nestled foothill landscapes. On a clear day, or when a föhn (a type of dry, warm down-slope wind) is blowing, the mountains will seem close enough to touch.
Whether you choose to water ski, dive, canoe, or relax on the beach, all of this is possible in the Obersee region. If the weather isn’t at its best, we recommend one of the many thermal baths around the lake.
A popular Obersee activity is a bicycle tour along the lake to the nearby towns. Lindau and its famous harbour entrance is only a half-hour bike ride. After a six-metre high lion statue greets you, visit the southernmost lighthouse in Germany. We highly recommend a trip to Lindau!
Today your stay at Lake Constance comes to an end. We would be happy to extend your stay or tailor your trip with additional stops. How about a stopover in Allgäu? Contact us, and we will put together your dream holiday according to your wishes.
