You should start exploring at the Viaduct Harbour. Here you can get to know the city from the water and also get a nice view of the Harbour Bridge and the skyline. Every shopper’s heart will beat faster on Queens Street and here also rises the street further up the Sky Tower. With a height of 328 meters, it is also the highest building in the southern hemisphere. From up there you have an impressive view of the city. Further along Queens Street, you will come across Aotea Square. Every Friday and Saturday there is a market here where you can buy souvenirs, art, fashion as well as jewelry - how about some souvenirs for your loved ones at home? Aside from the market, open air concerts are held regularly v and the Auckland Christmas market is also held here. It is one of the absolute favorite meeting places among the locals.

If the water level is high enough, you can swim in the pool of the waterfall and even swim under the waterfall. For those who like it less wet - an idyllic hiking trail along the shore invites you to hike.

If there's any smoke here, don't worry - it's all steam, because Rotorua is located in the middle of the volcanic strip on the North Island in New Zealand. Geysers, craters, hot pools and the smell of sulfur are characteristic of the city.

The Wai-O-Taupi Thermal Wonderland Park is located about 30 km south of Rotorua. The highlight here: The Lady Knox Geyser shoots a water fountain high into the air every morning at 10:15 a.m,. Shortly before that all the places around the geyser fill up and a ranger shares interesting facts about the hot spring. After that, a few chemicals are shaken inside the geyser and the water fountain shoots up into the air. There are more small craters and hot pools in the park. It hisses and bubbles everywhere and the water vapor rises to impressive heights. Sometimes the water and rocks are gray, sometimes green and sometimes bright yellow or orange. Rotorua is also known for its numerous forests and lakes, which are located around the town and offer excellent opportunities for hiking, biking and horseback riding. A gondola takes you directly to the top of Mt. Ngongotaha, where a panoramic view of the city awaits you at the top.

After breakfast, today we will head to Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the grounds of the oldest park in New Zealand are several Maori places of worship, which venerate the Tongariro and Ngauruhoe volcanoes. It is one of the most contrasting landscapes in New Zealand: emerald lakes, desert plateau, flowering meadows, snow-capped peaks and hot springs define the picture. It is a place full of extremes and surprises. There’s a reason why this place served as the gloomy realm of Mordor in Lord of the Rings. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is another essential experience: Considered one of the most beautiful full-day tours in New Zealand, it takes you across the slopes of all three mountains. Steaming craters, cooled lava flows and smoking springs make the experience unforgettable. It takes about seven to eight hours to cover the 19.4 kilometers, which involve climbing about 800 meters in altitude. Those who set out for the mountains should not forget proper gear: hiking boots, thermal clothing, rain jacket, sunscreen, glasses and gloves. Be prepared for any kind of weather - you may encounter all four seasons in one day. The lower slopes of the volcanoes are covered with flowers, herbs as well as shrubs and provide a habitat for native bird species.

Located at the southern tip, the city is separated from the South Island only by the Cook Strait. On sunny and bright days, you can also see the snow-capped Kaikoura Ranges on the South Island. Today, exploring the capital is on the itinerary. Te Whanganui-a-Tara is the name of the city in the Maori language, which translates to something like "the great harbor of Tara" and refers to the city's harbor. North of the city is the Kapiti Coast with its white sandy beaches. The city is the cultural center of the country and an absolute lifestyle metropolis. Pro tip: Take the Wellington Cable Car - it's only a 638 m ride on the 110-year-old train, but you still enjoy a great view from the Kelburn Lookout over the city and harbor at the end. The starting point is Lambton Quay at the harbor terminal.

By the way, the National Te Papa Museum is an essential experience for every visitor. Here you can learn more about nature, history, culture and art of the country. The knowledge is conveyed in a lively way and you can even participate in some of it yourself. It is easy to spend several hours here.

Time spent traveling from the Tongariro National Park to Wellington: 293 km / approx. 4 hours

After breakfast, make your way to the ferry that will take you from the North Island to the South Island. The ferry is spacious with ample seating on the decks and lounges. It has a café and restaurant, and there is also a small store and Wi-Fi on board. In about 3 hours, you will cover 92 km. The trip goes from Wellington along Pencarrow Head through the Cook Strait, Malborough Sounds, Tory Channel and Queen Charlotte Sound to Picton. In Wellington Bay, you will have wonderful views of the city. Cook Strait can be a little stormy from time to time. If you get seasick easily, don't forget to bring some nausea medication. It is not uncommon to see a few dolphins. Sit back and enjoy the green and blue fjord landscape. By the way, you can of course take your rental car with you on the ferry.

In the course of the afternoon, you will reach Motueka in the northern part of the South Island. The city is closest to the Abel Tasman National Park and Kahurangi National Park. Today it is the starting point of numerous tourist activities. Even if Motueka itself has rather less to offer in terms of tourism, the surrounding area is all the more exciting. As a center for the cultivation of tea, hops and various fruits such as grapes, apples and kiwis, you will find numerous plantations around the city. The town has a small museum and you are sure to find a nice and good restaurant - you can even eat in a converted church located on the main street. Walk along the waterfront or drive to the Riwaka Resurgence, the place where the Riwaka River goes above ground again for the first time.

The Abel Tasman National Park is truly a coastal paradise. Here you can combine sport activities with relaxed beach life. The park's coastline is unique, with rock formations of granite and marble lining the headlands hidden in dense forest. Our recommendation: visit Te Pukatea Bay, a crescent-shaped bay of golden sand - a place straight out of a picture book. A hiking trail leads up Pitt Head to an ancient Maori pa fort. Even today you can still see the terraced fields here. From here you have the most beautiful view over the flora and fauna that enrich the coast.

Ferry crossing from Wellington to Picton: 167 km / approx. 3 hours
